Program(s) affected: T1 Document created: 04 13, 2012
Tax year(s): 2011 Document last modified:
Version(s): All Problem status: Pending

How do I indicate in the program that the individual is regarded as a dependent senior for purposes of the calculation of the tax credit for home-support for seniors?

Select "Yes" under the DependentSeniors keyword and provide other required information. However, if the taxpayer's dwelling type for the year is one of the following options under the Home-Support keyword:

  • Apartment building
  • Condominium
  • Lived in own house

the DependentSeniors keyword is not available within the Home-Support keyword group and should be.

As a workaround, open a second Home-Support keyword group with the following information:

    Home-Support: Senior citizens' residence
    LivedSame-Place: Leave blank
    DependentSeniors: Yes
    DateDepSenior: Leave blank
    Resid-RentMonth: Fixed month rent
    Months-Rent: Rent per month 0.00

Note that if this information is not entered in the taxpayer’s file, the limit on the amount of eligible expenses will be $15,600, for a maximum tax credit of $4,680 per year (30% of $15,600), whereas for a dependent senior, the limit on the amount of eligible expenses is $21,600, for a maximum tax credit of $6,480 per year (30% of $21,600).
